Join Dr. Witt as he explains how to optimize DOAC pharmacokinetics in patients with obesity. Topics include hemostasis, the impact of obesity on clot formation, and the effects of obesity on DOAC absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for multidisciplinary healthcare providers in the community setting, including hematologists, oncologists, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other allied healthcare professionals who provide care to patients with venous thromboembolism.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying the increased risk of venous thromboembolism associated with obesity
  • Describe the potential impact of obesity on DOAC absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion

Daniel M. Witt, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS

Dr. Daniel Witt received his PharmD degree from the University of Washington. He completed a clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Centers, Seattle, Washington, and an advanced residency in primary care and family medicine at the University of Washington. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacotherapy, as well as Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, Salt Lake City. 

Dr. Witt is currently serving as a panel member for venous thromboembolism (VTE) guidelines being developed by the American Society of Hematology (ASH). He also serves on the board of directors for the Anticoagulation Forum, and is a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. He has authored/co-authored more than 90 journal articles, 11 book chapters, and given numerous lectures for continuing education programs. His research interests center on providing practical information regarding the optimal use of anticoagulation therapy to frontline practitioners and patients.
